Low-value, unedited and mass-produced content is bad for SEO, whoever wrote it.

Google’s stated position is that it cares about quality and usefulness, as well as purpose. It does not ask who typed the words. A page that answers a real question, is accurate and gives the reader something they could not get elsewhere can do well. A page that repeats what ten others already say, or exists only to catch searches, will struggle.

Our view is simple. AI is a tool, and the result depends on how it is used.

AI-assisted versus AI spam

AI-assisted content starts with research, has a clear reader in mind and goes through checking before it goes live. AI spam is the opposite. It is produced in bulk, published without anyone reading it, and aimed at rankings rather than people.

The same tool can produce either. What separates them is the process around it.

A note on timing

This reflects Google’s position as of October 2026. Search guidance changes from time to time, so it is worth checking Google’s own pages now and then rather than relying on any single article, ours included.

What does Google say about AI-generated content?

Google says AI can be used to create helpful content, but using it mainly to manipulate rankings breaches its spam policies.

In its guidance on generative AI content, Google points to a few things that matter. Content should be accurate, high quality and relevant to the reader. It should give users useful context where that helps. Using AI is not a problem; using it to produce lots of pages with little or no value is.

Scaled content abuse in plain English

Scaled content abuse means producing many pages mainly to rank, without helping anyone. It does not matter whether the pages come from AI, humans or a mix. If you publish hundreds of thin pages that say the same thing in slightly different words, that is the pattern Google’s policy is aimed at.

A steady stream of useful articles, each answering a distinct question, is a very different thing.

Who, How and Why

Google’s people-first content guidance suggests asking three questions of your own pages:

Who created this, and is that clear to readers?

How was it created, and is that sensible for the topic?

Why does it exist? To help people, or mainly to attract search traffic?

The guidance also ties into E-E-A-T, which stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. In practice, that means showing you know the subject first-hand. That is where AI-only content tends to fall short, because a model has not fixed a boiler, built an extension or run a campaign. Your team has.

When is AI content fine, risky or high risk?

AI content is fine when a human guides and checks it, risky when published unedited, and high risk when mass-produced for rankings.

Level

What it looks like

Examples

Fine

A human guides the work and checks the result

Researching what already ranks for a topic

Building an outline from real customer questions

Drafting, then fact-checking and editing

Adding your own photos and job details

Needs care

Useful in theory, but weak without a human pass

Publishing a draft without reading it

Generic advice that could suit any business

Unchecked facts, dates or claims

Articles with no first-hand detail

High risk

Volume for its own sake

Near-identical pages for different towns

Hundreds of thin pages published at once

Rewording other sites’ pages

Pages with no purpose beyond catching searches

Fine: research, outlines and checked drafts

Using AI to speed up the slow parts is sensible. Research, structure and a first draft save hours. The value comes after that, when someone checks the facts and trims the waffle. Then they add what only your business knows.

High risk: the town-page trap

We tell customers never to publish near-identical pages for different towns, because Google treats them as spam. It is tempting. You swap “Leeds” for “Wakefield” and “Bradford” and suddenly have thirty pages. AI makes it even quicker. It is also the clearest example of the pattern Google’s spam policies describe.

If you serve several areas, write something real for each one, such as a job you did there or a local question customers ask. With nothing distinct to say, skip the page.

Real photos and job stories beat stock content

Real photos and real job stories beat stock content every time. A picture of your own van on a street you worked on, with a short account of what the job involved, shows experience in a way no generic text can. It also gives readers a reason to trust you. One thing to take from this section: add something to every article that only your business could have written.

Can Google detect AI-generated content, and does it demote it?

Google focuses on whether content is helpful, not on detecting AI, so low-quality pages lose out whatever their origin.

People often ask whether Google can spot AI writing, and whether it punishes or deranks it. We cannot tell you exactly how Google’s systems work, and nobody outside Google can be certain, so we will not claim to. Its guidance is clear on one thing. The test is quality and purpose, not authorship.

Why thin pages tend to underperform

Thin, generic pages tend to underperform because they add nothing. If your article says what every other result says, there is no reason to rank it above them. That is true of human-written filler as well. Plenty of weak pages existed long before AI tools.

The practical lesson is to stop worrying about detection and start asking whether the page is better than what is already out there. If it is, you are in good shape. If it is not, no amount of disguise will help.

Is duplicate content from AI bad for SEO?

Duplicate content rarely brings a penalty, but it can make Google rank the wrong page, split signals and waste crawling.

As Ahrefs explains, duplicate content does not automatically cause a Google penalty. Google usually picks a preferred version of similar pages. The trouble is that it may not pick the one you want. AI makes this more likely when the same prompt produces very similar articles across a site.

Four reasons it still matters

The wrong page ranks. Google may choose an older or weaker version over your best one.

Link equity gets diluted. Links pointing at several copies are spread out rather than building one strong page.

Crawl budget is wasted. Search engines spend time on pages that add nothing, and may reach your good ones more slowly.

Scrapers can outrank you. Copied versions on other sites can sometimes appear above the original.

Canonical URLs, briefly

A canonical URL is a tag that tells search engines which version of a page is the main one. Where two pages are genuinely similar for a good reason, such as a printable version, point the copy to the original. For town pages, though, a canonical tag is not a fix. Near-identical pages are treated as spam, so the better answer is not to publish them.

Check your robots.txt

While you are reviewing technical basics, check your robots.txt isn’t blocking AI search tools. Some sites block them by accident, often through a default setting. If those tools can’t read your pages, they can’t learn from or cite them.

How do you use AI for SEO content safely?

Base each article on what already ranks, add your own experience and facts, check everything and publish regularly.

This is a sensible process to follow when publishing content.

Research before writing

Look at the pages already ranking for your topic. See what they cover, what they miss and what questions they leave open. Every Rank Otter article is researched from the pages already ranking on Google before a word is written, so the draft starts from real evidence rather than a guess.

Answer the questions customers actually ask

Write about what your customers ask you on the phone, in emails and on site visits. Those questions are specific. The answers are usually where your expertise shows. They are also the searches most likely to bring people who want to buy.

Add first-hand detail

Add your own photos and job stories, plus local knowledge. This is the single biggest gap between a forgettable AI article and a useful one. Check names, dates and claims too. A human read-through catches the slips that a model will not notice.

Keep control where you want it

Look for a tool that lets you choose how much control you want, from approving every article to running on autopilot. Some people may prefer to start with approval on every post, then relax it as they grow comfortable with the output. You can read more on our features page.

Be patient and measure properly

SEO takes three to six months to build, so publishing regularly matters more than one perfect post. Results come from your own Google Search Console, not our estimates, so you see impressions and clicks as Google records them.

Rank Otter was built by PS Website Design Ltd, a UK web and app development agency that has built and looked after websites for UK businesses since 2009. We use it on our own clients’ websites. Enter your website and we analyse it free in about 30 seconds, and your first article is written free with no card needed. Plans start at £29 + VAT a month for 30 articles, and you can cancel online in two clicks. To see what a researched, checked article looks like for your own site, get in touch with Rank Otter and we will happily talk it through.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google penalise AI content?

Not for being AI-written. Google focuses on quality and purpose. Content made mainly to manipulate rankings, whether by AI or people, can breach its spam policies.

Should I tell readers my content was written with AI?

The guidance asks you to consider how content was created and whether readers would expect to know. Being open is sensible where it matters to trust. Clear author details and honest sourcing help either way.

Can AI content rank on page one?

Yes, if it is useful, accurate and better than what already ranks. We cannot promise any position. Quality and relevance matter far more than who wrote the first draft.

How much human editing does AI content need?

Enough to check every fact, remove generic filler and add your own experience. At a minimum, someone should read it in full before it goes live. Our approval option exists for exactly this.

Does AI content help with ChatGPT and AI search visibility?

Clear, well-structured, accurate content gives AI search tools something useful to draw on. Make sure your robots.txt isn’t blocking them, or they may not be able to read your pages at all.

How long does AI content take to rank?

SEO usually takes three to six months to build. Regular publishing matters more than one perfect post, and your Google Search Console data will show progress as it happens.

Is it okay to use AI for writing?

Yes, as long as it is researched, checked and genuinely useful. Use it to speed up the work, then add what only your business knows. Avoid publishing it in bulk without review.

AI written content isn’t bad for SEO in itself, but unedited, mass-produced pages are risky.
